Topic InField is an intensive summer institute that has been run twice in the USA, first at the University of California at Santa Barbara in 2008 and most recently at the University of Oregon. InField offers an opportunity for linguists, graduate students in linguistics, and members of language communities to receive training in a range of skills needed to document, maintain, and/or revitalize minority languages. InField is divided into two parts: a two-week session of workshops on a range of topics related to language documentation, maintenance, and revitalization, followed by a four-week session of Field Training where students utilize the skills taught in the workshops.
In this LIPs session, Margaret Florey (RNLD) and Nick Thieberger (RNLD and University of Melbourne) will report on their experience of training at this InField and discuss whether/how this format of integrated training could work in Australia and potentially in other locations around the world.
