
Margaret Florey is a co-founder and co-Director of the Resource Network for Linguistic Diversity. She was awarded a PhD in Linguistics from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa in 1990. Margaret is an experienced field linguist with particular expertise in the endangered Austronesian languages of Central Maluku, eastern Indonesia, and Australian languages of the Pilbara region of Western Australia.
Training
Margaret's work is directed towards advocacy and international capacity development activities with members of endangered language communities, especially in Australia, Indonesia, the Netherlands, Taiwan and North America. She is currently developing RNLD's Documenting and Revitalizing Indigenous Languages training program.
Publications
Margaret has published widely on endangered languages, language documentation, capacity development in Indigenous communities, and ethnobiology. She serves on the editorial boards for Language Documentation & Conservation, Pacific Linguistics, and the Australian Journal of Linguistics.
Advisory roles
As part of her work with RNLD, Margaret serves in an advisory capacity for a number of workshops, conferences and organisations. She is also a co-Director of the Consortium for Training in Language Documentation and Conservation. Margaret is a Senior Fellow in the Asia Institute at the University of Melbourne, has contributed as an international expert at the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Section Experts’ Meetings on the Convention on Intangible Cultural Heritage, is the immediate past chair of the International Conference on Austronesian Linguistics steering committee, and served on the Board of Governors of Terralingua.
